Name: Trudy Williams
Address: Canton
Topic: History of Clayberg
Trudy Williams stated County Road 6 was and is still known as the County Road. The county’s poor farm was located on County 6. In 1953, the poor farm closed and burial plots were moved to Greenwood Cemetery and the land was sold to United Coal Company to strip mine.
The Clayberg family donated land in Cuba in memory of their son who was classified as missing in action in the Korean War. The county sold the property and took the proceeds of this sale to build the Clayberg nursing home, in the spirit of taking care of the poor in Fulton County. The Clayberg has continually been known to accept all no matter what a person’s economic situation. The Clayberg has been the final home to an unknown number of residents, and has been the source of livelyhood for an unknown number of employees. The Clayberg has been a source of comfort for family who have entrusted their loved ones to the tender care render at the Clayberg.
Trudy stated she is speaking as a tax payer and a voting resident of Fulton County and District 3 who has had family at the Clayberg.
Trudy asked the committee and the Fulton County Board to take time and consideration any decision being made about the Clayberg. This decision will be a part of each board member’s legacy.
